Why not take the train? It's never quicker than driving but it's sure more comfortable. Amtrak serves more than 500 cities in 46 states over 22,000 miles of track. You can order Amtrak tickets online to be delivered by mail (they'll send it by express mail if you trip is within 10 days) or to be picked up at the station before departure. Most people don't realize that Amtrak offers discount tickets. Typically they're for longer routes, e.g., Chicago to Los Angeles, but often regional tickets are discounted as well. A roundtrip ticket from Chicago to Grand Rapids, for example, that costs $50 might be discounted to $8 those in the know. All aboard. Refunds: Most tickets are refundable before travel begins; a fee applies in most cases ($30 per adult and $15 per child). Some discount tickets are non-refundable.
